Vitamin D & Recovery
There has been lots of talk about vitamin D lately, but what’s all the rave? Vitamin D is needed for a variety of bodily functions. Our bodies make vitamin D when we are exposed to sunlight. Living in North America, it is very common to have a vitamin D deficiency, especially with our long winters where we are not exposed to as much sun as we may need. Recent studies have shown that vitamin D plays a very important role in recovery, so it is important to make sure we are getting enough of this vitamin.
Vitamin D, specifically 25(OH)D (a form of vitamin D) has been correlated with reduced muscle fatigue. Research has shown that having higher vitamin D levels before exercising can decrease muscle fatigue and can improve the rate of muscle recovery post-exercise.
Vitamin D is also essential for bone health. The body needs it in order to better absorb other vitamins and nutrients such as calcium. Being deficient in vitamin D can increase chances of bone fractures and breaks and can lead to the development of osteoporosis.
Low vitamin D levels can also lead to sleep issues such as insomnia. The body needs an optimal amount of sleep for proper recovery. So, ensuring you have adequate vitamin D levels can support recovery through improving sleep quality.
The immune system also uses vitamin D and requires it in order to fight infections and prevent illness. It plays an integral role in maintaining overall health.
A great way to increase vitamin D levels is to spend more time outdoors and in the sun. Take some time to reconnect with nature. If you are concerned that this is not adequate (it likely isn’t when living in North America), consider speaking to your doctor about getting your vitamin D levels tested. It may be recommended to supplement with vitamin D to get those levels up. Remember that everyone is different and it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before adding new supplements to your daily routine.
